Summer is flying by and this month I want to talk a little about our talks about red lights. Red light runners have been skyrocketing in Calgary and it\u2019s a great talking point, let\u2019s make sure we discuss as we approach\n an intersection. I have included a\n link <\/a>to a great article on the topic.<\/p>\n

INTERSECTION and PEDESTRIAN SAFETY<\/strong><\/p>\n

With millions of drivers travelling on our highways every day, road safety should be our top priority. Intersections are one area where cars, buses, cyclists, motorcycles and pedestrians all meet, creating a dynamic\n mix of traffic. Intersections are some of the busiest places drivers encounter in their travels. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to always \u201cBE ALERT\u201d avoid distractions and ensure that your full attention is on the\n road ahead. You want to get to your destination safely. Drivers should slow down as they approach all intersections, stop and check all traffic before proceeding. Remember to always check in all directions (including\n your mirrors). Obey traffic signs at red lights and signals and always make a full stop at red lights and stop signs even when turning right. At a four-way stop, remember the Right of Way rule. You must yield\n to the vehicle on your right. While waiting in traffic, leave ample room between your vehicle and the one in front. Leave that safety space. Use your turn signals. Ensure that it is safe to change lanes before doing\n so.<\/p>\n

Pedestrians have the right of way in all marked and unmarked crosswalks. Pay attention to pedestrians crossing & Remember always wear your seat belt!!<\/p>\n

Summer is here and with no ideas you\u2019re going to hear about summer road hazards.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Problem:  Increased traffic and aggressive driving<\/p>\n

 Solution: Maintain safe distances and scan ahead<\/p>\n

2. Problem: Sun Glare<\/p>\n

Solution: Use sunglasses, maintain your windshield and try to plan road trips at times where you are not driving directly into sun.<\/p>\n

3. Problem: Potholes and uneven roads<\/p>\n

Solution: Proper scanning and watching for signage advising of hazards<\/p>\n

4. Problem: More motorcycles and cyclists<\/p>\n

Solution: Check mirrors and blind spots, give ample space, avoid distraction and use triple look system.<\/p>\n

5. Problem: Dehydration and driver fatigue.<\/p>\n

Solution: Stay hydrated, take regular breaks and share driving duties.<\/p>\n

6. Problem: Inexperienced drivers<\/p>\n

Solution: Be vigilant and avoid generalizing, not all new drivers are reckless!<\/p>\n

7. Problem: Animal Encounters<\/p>\n

Solution: Remember smooth steering, don\u2019t swerve, slow down and use high beams as much as possible after dark or at dusk.<\/p>\n

8. Problem: construction zones \u2013 summer is the most common time for road construction projects, these cause traffic delays, congestion, lane closures etc.<\/p>\n

Solution: reduce speed, pay attention to signage, be prepared for delays and allow extra time for travel.<\/p>\n

Have a safe summer and drive Safe<\/p>\n

Question: Which season do you think is the most dangerous for driving?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Answer: most of you probably assumed winter, but the reality is that more accidents occur between June and September, 70.8% of fatalities occur on dry roads.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Why??<\/strong><\/p>\n

Answer: It may be true that snowy and icy roads present more risks, but many drivers have a false sense of security and make bad driving choices such as speeding. Another factor is there are many more drivers on\n the road especially on long weekends.<\/p>\n

\n Let\u2019s all try to discuss this with our student as we do our coaching!<\/u>\n <\/p>\n

** Remember to be kind to your eyes and your skin as UV ratings climb in the upcoming weeks and months.<\/p>\n
